Retail sales in October 2021 in Puerto Rico reached a total of $3.05 billion. Compared to October 2020, sales increased by $388 million (14.6%), while compared to 2019, total retail sales increased by 18.9%. Retail sales have been higher than in 2020 for all months so far, and higher than in 2019 for all months except February.
The categories with the largest absolute year over year increases compared to 2020 were department stores with $111 million (12.7%), gas stations and convenience stores with $57 million (44.6%), and new and used motor vehicle stores with $55 million (14.9%). The only two categories with significant decreases in sales relative to October 2020 were sporting good and musical instrument stores (-17.2%) and furniture stores (-3.1%).
