A price war is ongoing between several airlines for the primacy of the San Juan – Santo Domingo flight itinerary. Signaling the willingness to stay in the fight and offer customers something more than the competition, SkyHigh Dominicana recently announced no charge for two suitcases of 70 pounds apiece on flights until the 15th of November 2024, on top of the usual free carry-on. Passengers flying from Santiago International airport (STI ) to San Juan (SJU) will also find options from JetBlue and Silver Airways totaling 72 flights per week taken together.
Punta Cana international airport (PUJ) also offers direct connections to Aguadilla and San Juan on a seasonal basis from all three carriers as well as more traditional carriers like American Airlines, American Eagle, Delta and SouthWest Airlines. This indicates a growing interest in travel between the islands due to increased travel for leisure and business, much of which is reflected in the growing number of vacation homes and retirement stays.
